FLUSHING, N.Y. and TEMPE, Ariz. -- Northwestern continued its final weekend of fall competition Saturday with action in both New York City at the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and Tempe, Ariz. at the Thunderbird Invitational, hosted by Arizona State University.
Nida Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) were the first Wildcats in action on the day as they played in the semifinals of the main doubles draw at the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. After posting back-to-back wins on Thursday and Friday, Hamilton and Mushrefova were tripped up in the semifinals by Southern California's tandem of Sabrina Santamaria and Kaitlyn Christian in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Santamaria and Christian advance to Sunday's championship match where they will face Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews.
In other action on Saturday, four 'Cats were in the desert for the second day of the 17th annual Thunderbird Invitational, hosted by Arizona State University. At the Thunderbird Invitational, Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) continued to play well as she won her quarterfinal match in the main draw against Cal's Annie Goransson. Turvy dropped the first set, 2-6, before rebounding to win 7-5, 6-1 to claim victory. In the semifinals, however, Turvy was undone by another Golden Bear, this time, Zsofi Susanyi. The Wildcat won the first set, 6-2, but she was unable to sustain the momentum as she fell, 6-1, 6-3.
In the back draw, Brittany Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) was victorious on Saturday. Wowchuk defeated Karla Bonacic of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-4.
Turvy and Wowchuk teamed up to defeat a team from Cal, Susyani and Duranteau, 8-5.
