Singles Draw
TEMPE, Ariz.-- Four members of Northwestern's women's tennis team will conclude their fall campaigns this weekend at the 17th annual Thunderbird Invitational hosted by Arizona State University at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz.
Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln), Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman), Brittany Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) and Anna Livadaru (Berlin, Germany/Boca Prep) will all be in action in the desert. Niu, Turvy and Wowchuk are each coming off of impressive runs at the ITA Midwest Regional Championship at Ohio State where they all appeared in the quarterfinals of the main singles draw. Turvy and Wowchuk represented the Wildcats in the semifinals, while Wowchuk finished as the draw's runner-up.
Livadaru will take on Arizona State's Nicole Smith in the round of 32 at 11:30 a.m. CT. Niu, the third-seeded player in the draw will play Fresno State's Melissa McQueen at the same time. Turvy, seeded fourth overall, and Wowchuk, seeded 5-8, will play in the second wave of matches against San Diego's Laura Claus and Anna Depenau, respectively. Those contests are slated for 1 p.m. Matches in the round of 16 will take place at 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
The Thunderbird Invitational will also feature an informal doubles tournament. Livadaru and Wowchuk will play against San Diego's Stephanie Hoffpauir and Juliette Coupez. That match will start Friday morning at 10:30 a.m.
Two other Wildcats will be in action Friday at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Nida Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale, Ill.) will play in the quarterfinals of the main doubles draw.
