EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) of the men's basketball team and sophomore Stephanie Holthus (Burlington, Ill./Central) of the volleyball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week.
Shurna led the Wildcats with 20 points in a day-after-Thanksgiving win over Stony Brook, keeping his Big Ten-leading scoring average at 21.2 points per outing. Shurna also tallied six rebounds as Northwestern improved to a perfect 6-0 entering its Tuesday night test at Georgia Tech in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
Holthus racked up a match-high 19 kills in Northwestern's thrilling 3-1 victory over second-ranked Nebraska in the regular-season finale Saturday night. Two of those kills came in a decisive 5-0 run down the stretch of the third set. Holthus also ranked second for the night on NU with 16 kills and on Tuesday was named to the All-Big Ten squad for the first time in her career.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is senior Brittany Orban (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) of the women's basketball team. Orban took the lead on organizing the basketball game played between the Evanston and New Trier Special Olympics teams during halftime of the Northwestern-DePaul contest at Welsh-Ryan Arena on Sunday.
