Schedule Announced for 2012 Big Ten/Big East Challenge

EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern opens up its 2012 baseball season against West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Seton Hall in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge to be held Feb. 17-19 in St. Petersburg and Clearwater, Fla.

The conferences in conjunction with the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Sports Commission, today released the schedule for the fourth-annual event. The 2012 Challenge features 10 teams from the Big Ten and nine teams from the Big East playing 30 games over three days to open the college baseball season.

The 2012 Challenge features Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue from the Big Ten and Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, St. John's, Seton Hall, South Florida and West Virginia from the Big East.

The event is being played at current and former Major League facilities in the St. Petersburg/Clearwater area.

Northwestern is slated to open its 2012 campaign by taking on West Virginia on Friday, Feb. 17 at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg. The Wildcats square off against Pittsburgh at Jack Russell Memorial Stadium in Clearwater the following day, before wrapping up the tournament against Seton Hall at Walter Fuller Baseball Complex in St. Petersburg on Sunday.

The Big Ten won the inaugural Challenge in 2009, 15-9, while the Big East was victorious in 2010, 17-13, and in 2011, 14-10.

Ticket information for the 2012 Challenge as well as the remainder of the 2012 Northwestern Baseball schedule will be released at a later date.
