COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern's Brittany Wowchuk represented the Wildcats Tuesday morning in the final match of the singles draw at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Columbus, Ohio, but the junior came up just short of capturing the title.
Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) lost to Michigan's Emina Bektas in the final match at the Varsity Tennis Center on the campus of Ohio State University. Wowchuk dropped the finale, 6-4, 6-2.
The junior was one of three 'Cats to reach the quarterfinals of the singles draw, joining Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) and Kate Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman). Turvy also reached the semifinals of the draw, where she was eliminated by Bektas in a three-set thriller on Monday, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (0).
Northwestern was also represented in the final match of the doubles draw, which took place on Monday. Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Nida Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) were undone in that affair by Notre Dame's duo of Kristy Frilling and Shannon Mathews, 8-2.
NU will next hit the courts at the Thunderbird Classic, hosted by Arizona State University. That tournament will take place Nov. 4-6. The 'Cats will also wait and see if any among them will qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships in New York City; that event runs Nov. 3-6.
