Turvy and Wowchuk Advance to ITA Midwest Regional Semifinals

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Northwestern's wildly successful run at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships continued Monday as Kate Turvy and Brittany Wowchuk advanced to the semifinals of the main singles draw.
In the quarterfinals earlier Monday, Turvy (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) knocked off Michigan's Sam Crister in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. She will take on another Wolverine, Emina Bektas in the semifinal round.
On the other side of the bracket, Turvy's teammates Belinda Niu (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) and Wowchuk (Toronto, Ontario/Oakville Trafalgar) were in action. Wowchuk, seeded five through eight, beat Notre Dame's Kristy Frilling in a mild upset, 6-4, 6-4. Frilling entered the draw as the top-ranked singles seed. Niu was unable to to join her fellow Wildcats in the semifinals, however, as she lost to DePaul's Patricia Fargas, 6-3, 6-4.

Before the singles action began Monday, Northwestern's Linda Abu Mushrefova (Bradenton, Fla./Pendleton) and Nida Hamilton (Oak Brook, Ill.) played in the championship match of the main doubles draw against Notre Dame's Frilling and Shannon Mathews. The Fighting Irish were able to win that match and claim the title with an 8-2 victory.
