Complete Summary of Northwestern's Fall 2010 Academic Success

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern student-athletes continued to excel in the classroom in the fall quarter of the 2010-11 academic school year. Some highlights from the 2010 fall quarter are as follows:
The fall quarter 2010 overall student-athlete GPA was 3.17, the fourth-highest in program history and the highest fall quarter average in program history. Last year's fall quarter GPA was 3.14.
15 out of 19 teams achieved team GPAs of 3.00 or better (down one from the fall of 2009; the all-time NU high is 17)
18 out of 19 teams achieved team GPAs above 2.90 for the second-straight fall quarter
322 out of 468 student-athletes (69 percent) achieved GPAs of 3.0 or higher (up from 297 last year)
146 student-athletes achieved GPAs of 3.5 or higher and 23 of those had perfect 4.0 GPAs
"As always, the academic success we continue to have here at Northwestern is rooted in the quality student-athletes our coaches recruit to our campus and we could not be more proud of them," said Margaret Akerstrom, Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services. "The academic support system we have in place is enhanced by the willingness of our student-athletes to work hard every day in the classroom to earn the outstanding results we know they are capable of achieving."
In addition, Northwestern broke its program record for single-sport season Academic All-Big Ten honors for the fourth-straight year with 90 in the fall of 2010. The football team broke its program record for the fifth-straight year with 32 awards and also won the AFCA Academic Achievement Award for the sixth time in 13 years with a 100 percent graduation rate for the current data cohort.
