Wildcats Excel in Singles, Doubles at Home Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern's momentum from the opening day of the Wildcat Invitational in Evanston carried over to Saturday morning, as NU won all six singles matches and two of three doubles contests on the second day of action in the weekend-long round-robin tournament.

The tandem of Kate Turvy and Brittany Wowchuk collected their third consecutive doubles victory to start the spring with an 8-3 victory against Florida International's Magali Holt and Christine Seredni. Senior Maria Mosolova and freshman Belinda Niu also won their doubles match Saturday, an 8-3 decision over the Panthers' Giulietta Boha and Maria Spenceley.

NU's 30th-ranked pairing of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton were unable to dig themselves completely out of a 7-4 hole, losing 8-6 to Liset Brito and Rita Maisak.

Moving into singles, there was little that Northwestern's opponents from FIU could do to stem the 'Cats' strong play, with five Wildcats winning in straight sets. Included in that group was 52nd-ranked Maria Mosolova, who shrugged off a slow start to defeat Brito, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 120 Kate Turvy, who bested Maisak, 6-3, 6-1.

Brittany Wowchuk gained some big-match experience with her contest against Christine Seredni, where she went ahead 6-0 but dropped the second set 4-6. Wowchuk trailed 4-2 in the third before rallying to get back on serve and going on to win the decisive set, 7-5.

The round-robin tournament continues with doubles play at 8 a.m. Sunday followed by a round of singles expected to conclude at approximately noon CT.
