EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore Dayana Sarkisova (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) of the women's fencing team and senior Andrew Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) of the wrestling team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athetes of the Week for their performances last week.
Sarkisova was 11-0 on the day for NU's foil squad at the UC San Diego West Invitational, leading Northwestern to five wins in five duals to open its 2011 season. Sarkisova also reached the 100 career wins plateau with her victory against host UC San Diego. Last season, Sarkisova reached All-American status in her freshman campaign.
Ranked No. 12 nationally at 149 pounds, Nadhir keyed Northwestern in an exciting 17-15 defeat of 20th-ranked Pittsburgh. With NU lacking two regular starters from its lineup, each team was able to claim five match victories in the dual but a pair of major decision bonus-point wins by the Wildcats proved to be the difference in the outcome. One of those came courtesy of Nadhir, who dominated Pitt's Dane Johnson to the tune of a 20-7 victory to improve to 21-2 on the year. Earlier in the day, Nadhir tech falled his Millersville opponent, 21-6, as the Wildcats moved to 13-0 in duals this year by sweeping its three matches at the Pittsburgh Duals.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior Katie Doyle (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) of the women's soccer team. Doyle and other members of the men's and women's soccer teams as well as assistant coach Katie Shields visited Family Focus of Evanston last week to teach soccer skills to childen in second through sixth grades.
