Badger Classic -- Complete Results

MADISON, Wis. -- In its 2010 season debut, Northwestern outclassed the field at the Badger Cross Country Classic hosted by Wisconsin and placed first out of eight teams Friday evening. Running in her first cross country meet since 2008, Sophie Ewald raced to a second-place overall finish in the 4K event, crossing less than a second out of first in 14:19.2.

Following Ewald's lead was sophomore Audrey Huth, who picked up where she left off in 2009 by placing third overall in 14:25.4. What made Northwestern's team victory possible was the ensuing string of five straight Wildcat freshmen who scored points for NU, led by Orland Park native Lexie Goldsmith in fifth place (14:35.7).

"Today was a great starting point to the season for our team," said head coach April Likhite. "This was a good indicator of where our early fitness is as we enter the most demanding training phase of our season. I was impressed with how well our freshmen performed and equally impressed with the leadership and guidance of our returners."

Michelle Moriset and Ann Powers placed sixth and seventh, respectively, to help Northwestern to a meet-low 23 points. Fellow first-years Julia Buford and Libby Kocha were the sixth and seventh NU runners to cross on Friday.

Marquette claimed a distant second in the team standings with 60 points while Big Ten foe and host Wisconsin took third with 83 points. Wisconsin came into the race ranked No. 26 in the USTFCCA preseason poll.

Northwestern is next slated to compete at the Illinois Intercollegiates meet on Friday, Sept. 17, on the campus of Illinois State.
