Furman Invite Results -- Day Two
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- On the second day of action at the Furman Fall Invitational Saturday, Northwestern placed two individuals -- junior Elena Chernyakova and sophomore Kate Turvy -- in fifth in their respective singles flights. Junior Stacey Lee, meanwhile, took sixth in flight four.
In flight three singles, Turvy first defeated Clemson's Laurianne Henry, 7-5, 6-0, before topping Tennessee's Millie Nichols, 6-2, 6-3, in the fifth-place match.
Chernyakova, who has already earned a spot in the flight three doubles final to be contested Sunday, picked up a win over Furman's Susan Bitetti -- who was forced to retire in the first set -- and an impressive 6-0, 6-0, victory over the Paladins' Manon Veldman.
Lee won a three-set match against Tennessee's Whitney Wofford, 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-4, before succumbing to Florida State's Federica Suess, 6-1, 7-6 (2).
In the round-robin format flight six, freshman Natalie Edell gained two victories on Saturday, first defeating Furman's Jenny Porter in an incredible match that saw all three sets go to tiebreakers before Edell eventually prevailed, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3). She finished the day by knocking off Vanderbilt's Megan Gornet.
In addition to Chernyakova and Edell vying for the flight three doubles title Sunday, NU will also send Lee and Linda Abu Mushrefova out to compete for third place in flight two. That match is scheduled for 9 a.m. CT.
