Furman Invite Complete Results -- Day One
EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern kicked off competition at the Furman Fall Invitational Friday in Greenville, S.C., with two rounds of doubles and one round of singles play. Highlighting the day was NU's flight three doubles team of junior Elena Chernyakova and freshman Natalie Edell, who advanced to the doubles final with two victories early Friday.
Chernyakova and Edell first dispatched of Clemson's Maria Belaya and Caroline Magnussun, 8-5, before overcoming Florida State's tandem of Federica Suess and Manon Veldman, 8-2. The NU duo will meet North Carolina's Jennifer Stone and Laura Slater in the final.
In flight two doubles, junior Stacey Lee and sophomore Linda Abu Mushrefova won their opening match of the tournament, 8-5, over Furman's Monica Arguello and Katherine Oudin. The `Cats were edged in tiebreakers in the second round, however, falling to North Carolina's Jelena Durisic and Tessa Lyons.
Northwestern came up short in each of its five singles matches, including in flight two where Abu Mushrefova - who enjoyed a stellar freshman season at No. 5 singles in 2010 for NU - lost to Clemson's Nelly Ciolkolwski, 6-2, 6-2.
In a change from the initial schedule due to predicted rain on Sunday, the teams will play two rounds of singles. Play is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. CT.
