ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Devon Brown (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Cathedral Catholic) made quite an impression in her first collegiate tournament, shooting a 3-over 74 over the final 18 holes of the Wolverine Invitational to finish in a three-way tie for third. Northwestern followed her lead, finishing tied for third in the season-opening tournament with a 67-over 919.
"Devon's third place finish was an impressive start to her Wildcat career," said head coach Emily Fletcher. "We knew she was a player who would have an immediate impact on our program and she proved that this weekend. I was very impressed with her game and her composure. We are showing signs of good play. In addition to Devon, Lauren had two solid rounds and Alex grinded out her last two rounds after getting off to a rough start. We have work to do, and we're looking forward to getting back out on the course."
Brown entered Sunday's final round tied for 12th individually, and put together what was tied for the third lowest round of the day with her 74, which included a birdie on the par-4 17th and 13 pars on the afternoon. Brown closed out the two-day event with a 12-over 225, edging out teammate Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) by two strokes. Weaver notched the third top-10 finish of her career, finishing in a tie for seventh with a 14-over 227.
Alexandra Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) just missed posting a top-20 finish herself, closing out the Wolverine Invitational with a 19-over 232 after a 5-over 76 in round three and placing in a tie for 24th overall. Rebecca Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Central) finished fourth on the Northwestern scorecard with a 25-over 238 while Kelsey Lindenschmidt (West Chester, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) rounded out the Wildcat competitors with a 27-over 240.
Northwestern began the day in fifth-place and in a six-team log jam that was separated by just nine shots. The Wildcats pulled themselves away from the pack with a 22-over 306 over the final 18 holes, settling into a tie for third place with Western Michigan. Northwestern finished tops among Big Ten schools competing at the Wolverine Invitational, beating out fifth-place Michigan (72-over 924) and sixth-place Indiana (73-over 925).
Florida International prevailed over the 17-team field, shooting a 44-over 896 and defeating second-place Iowa State (55-over 907) by 11 shots. FIU's Paula Hurtado captured the individual title, posting a three-round total of 9-over 222 and beating out Brown by just three shots.
Northwestern will try and use the lessons learned this weekend as it travels to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Dick McGuire Invitational on Friday, Sept. 17 and Saturday, Sept. 18. The Wildcats finished eighth out of 17 teams at the always competitive tournament in 2009.
