Wildcats Welcome Popovec to Northwestern Family

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern head women's basketball coach Joe McKeown announced today that forward Kate Popovec will be joining the Wildcat program. The 6-3 transfer from Pittsburgh will sit out the 2010-11 season but will take the court for the 'Cats in 2011-12 with junior eligibility.

"Kate brings power and intensity to our front court," McKeown said. "She is another great prospect from Ohio who is tough and has a tremendous desire to win. We are extremely excited for her to join the Wildcat family."

2009-10: At Pittsburgh -- Saw action in 21 games with 10 starts ... Averaged 15 minutes a game and scored 60 points on the season ... Fourth on team with 3.9 rpg ... Led the Panthers twice in rebounds with nine against North Florida (11/17) and 12 at Youngstown State (12/2) ... Recorded one double-double at Youngstown State, contributing season bests 11 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

2008-09: At Pittsburgh -- Played in 27 games for the Panthers, making one start against DePaul on March 8 ... Collected a season-high 13 rebounds at Western Michigan on Nov. 20 in just her second game, adding eight points and an assist in the winning effort ... Tallied two double-doubles on the year--Duquesne (12/3) and West Virginia State (12/13) ... Scored a season-high 17 pts against WVSU ... Missed a double-double against Villanova by one rebound, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds ... Prior to injuring her ankle in early January, led the Panthers in rebounds with 7.2 per game off the bench.

High School: Sporting News Honorable Mention All-America ... McDonald's All-America nominee ... Three-time All-State team member at Canfield High including a first team nod in 2008 ... Four-time All-MAC Conference first team member ... Three-time All-MAC Player of the Year ... Four-time All-Northeastern Ohio Inland District team member and Player of the Year in 2008 ... Named to Ohio Girls Basketball Report's Dream Team ... Broke numerous school records, including 1,400 points and 1,100 rebounds ... Also holds the school record for single game blocked shots (10) and single season blocks (84) ... Hit the 1,000-point milestone early in her senior year ... Member of the National Honor Society and graduated in top 10 of her class.

Personal: Daughter of Ken and Renee Popovec ...Two sisters -- Michelle and Julianne ... Sister Michelle played basketball at Allegheny and father played football at Columbia.
