EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern sophomore Paul Snieder (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) excelled as both a position player and a pitcher during the 2010 season and has been rewarded for his performance by being named a third-team All-American by Ping!Baseball. Snieder earned the honor as a utility player.
Earlier this week, he was named one of 10 national semifinalists for the inaugural John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.
After hurling just 6 1/3 innings as a freshman in 2009, Snieder took on a greatly expanded role as the Wildcats' closer this season. He responded by tying a school single-season record with 12 saves, matching Chris Nichting's total from the 1986 campaign. Snieder was was scored upon only four times in his team-leading 25 appearances and notched a 2-3 record with a 1.79 ERA while limiting opponents to a .177 batting average. In 40 1/3 innings pitched, he recorded 35 strikeouts.
For his efforts, Snieder was recognized as a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a reliever.
Snieder also had a stellar year with his bat while mainly playing first base, in addition to designated hitter. His 76 hits, 25 multi-hit games, 15 doubles and a .540 slugging percentage all paced the team. He also ranked second with 7 home runs, 36 RBI and a .440 on-base percentage, and was third with a .353 batting average and 34 runs scored.
