EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Chris Lashmet (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the baseball team and sophomore Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) of the women's lacrosse team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Smith was a top performer for NU during championship weekend at Towson. In the 'Cats' semifinal win over North Carolina, Smith led NU with four points on two goals and two assists. She followed that up with a hat trick in the NCAA final against top-ranked Maryland, including the game's first goal less than 90 seconds into the contest. On Monday, Smith was named an IWCLA All-American.
Lashmet collected three total hits and scored a run for the Wildcats during the 2010 Big Ten Tournament at Ohio State last week. Lashmet, who started 54 of NU's 56 games this season, finished with a .329 average and tied for second on the team with 70 hits. Lashmet was one of four Wildcats to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors this year.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Rebecca Lederhausen (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) of the women's golf team. Lederhausen and other members of SAAC joined forces with Northwestern's Interfraternity Council and the National Panhellenic Council to host a Pancake Breakfast on campus on Saturday. This was done to ensure that students started their day off with a full breakfast before they partook in the Dillo Day festivities.
