EVANSTON, Ill. -- For the second consecutive season, Northwestern ranked seventh nationally out of 84 Division I wrestling programs in overall team GPA for the 2009-10 campaign, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced last week. The 'Cats also maintained their standing as having the highest team GPA among the Big Ten's 11 member wrestling squads.
NU posted a 3.185 GPA as a group, just a shade behind Stanford (3.189) in sixth place. The next-highest representative out of the Big Ten on the NWCA's All-Academic Team list was Penn State in 15th. Harvard led all schools with a collective GPA of 3.3098.
"Our guys did another fantastic job balancing their academics with performing in the most challenging wrestling conference in the country," said Northwestern head coach Tim Cysewski. "It takes a huge level of commitment to do that and as a team we did it better than anyone else in the Big Ten."
A team's GPA is determined based on the GPAs of 12 student athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were the entries in the school's conference tournament qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they may fill those spots with wrestlers that competed in at least one varsity dual during the season.
"The All-Academic team is a testament to our member coaches that they are striving to make their program as competitive as they can," said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. "Academics play a huge role for the student-athlete, especially after they are done competing and out in the working world as our next generation of teachers, coaches, and businessmen."
