EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat juniors David Lipsky (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) of the men's golf team and Michelle Batts (Bloomingdale, Ill./Glenbard North) of the softball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Lipsky made birdie on three-straight holes during the back nine Sunday at Windsong Farm Golf Club to pull away from the field and win the 2010 Big Ten individual championship with a 72-hole total of 3-under 281 (67-72-71-71). Lipsky is the 10th different Wildcat to become a Big Ten individual champ and the second in two years, following Eric Chun in 2009. Lipsky was one of only two players to finish under par for the week.
Batts launched three home runs and drove in 13 over a three-game span as the Wildcats defeated Illinois-Chicago and Penn State last week. For the week, Batts batted .667 and slugged 1.778 with two singles, a double and the 10th, 11th and 12th home runs of her season. Her grand slam with two outs in the sixth Sunday against Penn State broke a 5-5 tie and locked up the series sweep for Northwestern.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Corbin Bryant (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park) of the football team. Bryant and many other student-athletes assisted with the Special Olympics track and field event that took place on Sunday, May 2. Corbin and the other volunteers served as timers, announcers, award presenters, coaches and fans for the extraordinary athletes who participate in area Special Olympics programs.
