ATHENS, Ga. -- One week after wrapping up their 2010 team dual season, four Wildcat players will shift their focus to competing in the NCAA Individual Championships hosted by the University of Georgia, which begin Wednesday with first-round singles action. Junior Maria Mosolova is NU's highest-ranked individual, entering the singles draw in the 9-16 seed grouping.
Complete brackets for the singles and doubles championships are available in downloadable PDFs at the top of the page.
Mosolova's quest to reach All-American singles status for the third time in three years begins with an opening-round match against Harvard's Holly Cao at 1 p.m. CT. That contest will be followed by a potential second-round match against either Denise Muresan of Michigan or Katrina Tsang of North Carolina. Mosolova (30-13) is 1-1 this season against conference foe Muresan and 2-0 vs. Tsang.
Joining Mosolova in the singles championship is four-time NCAA qualifier and 41st-ranked Samantha Murray (28-11), who opens her tournament with a tough opponent in Marina Cossou of California at 12:30 p.m. CT Wednesday. Murray and Cossou met during NU's semifinal match at the 2010 ITA National Indoor Team Championship in February, with Murray playing one of her best matches of the season to win 6-3, 6-3.
A Murray victory over Cossou would likely set up a second-round date with the draw's No. 1 overall seed, Georgia Tech's Irina Falconi.
Meanwhile, the NCAA Doubles Championship begins Thursday and will feature a Northwestern duo in senior Lauren Lui and sophomore Elena Chernyakova. The 'Cats, who are 8-8 overall as a doubles team in 2009-10, are set to face the team of Kayla Duncan and Katariina Tuohimaa of TCU in the first round.
Start times for Thursday's doubles matches will be announced shortly.
Chernyakova is making her debut in the NCAA Individual Championships while Lui is competing in the doubles draw for the third consecutive year. A year ago, she teamed with Georgia Rose to reach All-American status for the first time in her career.
