EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern junior Eric Jokisch (Virginia, Ill./Virginia) has been named the Big Ten co-Pitcher of the Week the conference office announced Monday. It is the second such honor of his career. He shares this week's award with Iowa's Jarred Hippen.
Jokisch's performance in Thursday's opening game of the Wildcats' series with Michigan State was integral in NU earning its first berth in the Big Ten tournament in four years. The left-hander nearly went the distance against the Spartans, hurling 8 2/3 innings in Northwestern's 2-1 win.
He allowed just the one run against MSU's high-powered offense and made big pitches on numerous key occasions, getting the Spartans to hit into five double plays.
The performance lowered Jokisch's ERA to 3.25 in Big Ten play, the fourth-best mark in the conference. He led the league with 63.2 innings pitched against league opponents.
Northwestern (24-30, 13-11 Big Ten) is the No. 3 seed for the 2010 Big Ten Baseball Tournament which gets underway Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio. The Wildcats square off against sixth-seeded Indiana at 2:35 p.m. Central time with Big Ten Network providing live television coverage.
