EVANSTON, Ill. -- Running as an unattached competitor, Northwestern's Sophie Ewald claimed second place in the 5K at the Chicago Penultimate hosted by the University of Chicago Saturday, setting a personal best with a time of 16:51.09.
Both Ewald and the 5K winner, Liz Lawton of the University of Chicago, eclipsed the previous track record of 16:52 at the Ted Haydon Track, which was set earlier this spring by Northwestern freshman Audrey Huth.
The next closest competitor to finish behind Ewald trailed the NU sophomore by nearly 80 seconds.
"We're very proud of the way Sophie represented herself and Northwestern Cross Country at the meet," said NU head coach April Likhite. "Her performance capped off what was a very exciting spring track season for us."
