EVANSTON, Ill. -- In connection with National Student-Athlete Day, Northwestern has recognized 19 of its student-athletes, one from each of the University's intercollegiate sports. Each honoree was nominated by their respective head coach based upon the individual's contribution to their team.
The criteria to select this year's Wildcat honorees included their work ethic, commitment, leadership, community service involvement and their position to serve as a role model for fans of their respective sport. Each of the recipients will be honored at a reception Tuesday evening, which will be attended by Northwestern University faculty and administrators.
Northwestern continues to experience success both on and off the playing fields during the 2009-10 school year. Thirty eight different Northwestern student-athletes have been tabbed All-Conference through the winter sports season, with volleyball's Kate Nobilio being named the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year and men's basketball's Drew Crawford earning the media's nod for Big Ten Freshman of the Year. In addition, the Wildcats have had 120 student-athletes honored as Academic All-Big Ten recipients thus far (83 for the fall season, 37 in the winter), including three ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honorees.
National Student-Athlete Day, a program of the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS), has been celebrated annually on April 6 since 1987. It celebrates the outstanding achievements of high school and college student-athletes who have excelled in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to their schools and communities.
