MILWAUKEE - Northwestern was only able to scratch out three hits as it dropped the opening game of its doubleheader to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 9-0 Wednesday evening at Miller Park. The nightcap of the twinbill is slated to begin at approximately 8 p.m.
Milwaukee got on the board first against Luke Farrell in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on first and second and two away, Shaun Wegner doubled to left field to plate Tim Patzman. Nino Guerrero attempted to score from first on the play, but Geoff Rowan, Trevor Stevens and Chad Noble to nab him at the plate.
The Panthers added to their lead in the fourth as they opened the inning with four straight hits, including three consecutive of the extra-base variety to chase Farrell from the game. Patzman, Sam Sivilotti and Guerrero each drove in one run in the frame, while Cole Kraft brought home two more unearned runs with a single against reliever Matt Gailey to make it 6-0.
Milwaukee tacked on one more run in the fifth as Doug DeKoning led off the frame with his third homer of the year.
Meanwhile, the Wildcats had a tough time mounting an offensive charge against Panther starter Jayme Sukowaty. The junior right-hander set down NU in order in four of the first five innings. Northwestern's best opportunity to score came in the sixth when Chris Kontos started the inning with a single and Arby Fields drew a walk. However, the Wildcats stranded runners on the corners after Paul Snieder just missed a three-run homer.
UWM pushed across two final runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Ben Long.
Sukowaty worked the first six innings, surrendering just the three hits while walking one and striking out two. Farrell suffered the loss, hurling three innings with eight hits and five runs (four earned) allowed.
