Havey Dominant as Northwestern Defeats Milwaukee, 4-1

MILWAUKEE - Freshman Jack Havey was dominant, hurling six innings of perfect relief as Northwestern downed Milwaukee 4-1 in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday evening at Miller Park. The left-hander retired all 18 batters he faced while striking out eight.
"That performance was well worth the price of admission," Northwestern head coach Paul Stevens said. "Jack has been coming along the past couple of outings and he had command of everything he was throwing out there.
"That was as impressive of a performance by a freshman that I have seen in a long time and he did it against a very good hitting team."
Milwaukee got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a two-out walk. Dan Buchholz drew the free pass and Ben Long doubled him home to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead.
Havey relieved Joe Muraski to start the second inning and set Milwaukee down in order over the next two frames before the Northwestern offense finally came to life.
After being held scoreless in the opening game and through the first three innings of the nightcap, the Wildcats put two runs on the board in the fourth to take the lead. Chris Lashmet started things with a leadoff walk against Bob Stone and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Zach Morton. Following a strikeout, Chris Kontos came through with a big two-out hit, doubling to right to tie the game. Colby Everett then followed with a triple to straight-away center to give NU a 2-1 lead.
The Wildcats added two runs to their lead in the top of the fifth. Trevor Stevens started the rally with a single and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. Chad Noble then followed with a single to center to plate Stevens, while advancing to second on the throw to the plate. NU would eventually loaded the bases and Kontos drew the second consecutive walk with two outs to bring home Northwestern's fourth run.
The three-run cushion proved to be more than enough for Havey (2-0) who was totally dominant against a Milwaukee squad that sports a .331 team batting average.
The Wildcats return to action at 6 p.m. Friday as they travel to Illinois to open up a three-game series. All three contests are being televised live by Big Ten Network.
