MINNEAPOLIS - Northwestern out-hit Minnesota 12-10 but dropped an 8-4 decision to the Golden Gophers in the final game of the Dairy Queen Classic at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome Sunday afternoon.

NU (3-7) struck first in the top of the second, manufacturing a run against T.J. Oakes. Paul Snieder and Chris Lashmet started the game with back-to-back hits and both runners moved up 90 feet on a bunt by Colby Everett. Jack Havey followed with an RBI groundout to put the Wildcats in front.

Minnesota took a 2-1 lead against Zach Morton in the third as AJ Pettersen had a run-scoring double and JT Canakes added an RBI groundout.

The Golden Gophers would extend their lead to four in the sixth thanks to three unearned runs. Michael Kvasnicka ended up on third base following an error to open the inning and then scored on a wild pitch. Morton retired the next two batters before Minnesota scored a pair of runs with two outs on hits by Kyle Geason and Drew Hanish.

Northwestern got the two runs right back in the top of the seventh to get within 5-3. Everett brought home Snieder from second with a single to right field. A basehit by Havey forced Minnesota to relieve Cullen Sexton with Tim Ryan. An infield single by Quentin Williams made it a two-run game and an error on the play gave NU runners at the corners. However, a double play ended the threat.

The Gophers would tack on two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and one more in the eighth to surge in front 8-3. The Wildcats attempted to rally in the ninth as Hamilton Wise brought home Lashmet with a single to left, but Havey was thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Everett, Havey and Snieder had two hits apiece for NU, while Petterson went 4-for-5 for Minnesota.

Havey, Snieder and Chad Noble represented the Wildcats on the all-tournament team.

Northwestern returns to action at 9 p.m. Central time Friday as it opens a four-game series at UNLV.
