Throughout their careers, Northwestern seniors Lauren Lui and Samantha Murray have been two of the driving forces behind NU's rise to the level of perennial powerhouse. During their final go-rounds with the Wildcats, "Speeds" and Sam will keep NU fans current on the program's latest happenings in their blog, "Serve and Volley," which continues today on NUsports.com.
Hey Wildcat fans,
We just returned from North Carolina where we spent Spring Break 2010. The weather there was pretty nice despite some chilly days. All of us have definitely gotten tanner over the last week so that was exciting. Even Kate Turvy got a little darker, but I definitely won the contest for the tannest, hands down.
So we arrived in Raleigh late Friday night. Our flight was an interesting one. All of us ended up with middle seats. We were a little angry that no one gave us the armrests. You would think other people would realize how uncomfortable we were in the middle seats and be very happy that we are smaller people, but no, we all had to come up with creative ways to take naps. However, Maria had the best story. She got a cup of water from the stewardess before her nap and was planning on drinking it after her nap. But when she woke up, her cup was empty. She swore she ordered some water and thought she was going crazy when her "friendly" neighbor informed her he was thirsty and drank her water. I mean who does that? And if that wasn't bad enough, he stole her peanuts too! That definitely crossed the line.
Going to North Carolina meant playing outdoor tennis. Playing outside can be tricky with the sun and wind. We definitely experienced one of those elements throughout our matches against North Carolina and Duke. The wind was swirling in every direction which made it challenging for both teams. However, in the end, we came up a little short. They played very well, but these matches will only make us better in the future. We can take many things from this weekend and work on them to be that much better in May.
After our matches, we headed to Wilmington, N.C., for some R-and-R. During the ride, Kate and Linda provided us with some entertainment in the back of the van. They sang and sang for a good 2 hours to a variety of songs (from Shania Twain to the Celine Dion's theme song from Titanic, which almost drove Jackie off the road). It was an entertaining drive that was unforgettable.
So Spring Break has come to an end. We are returning to Big Ten play this weekend versus No. 6 Michigan and Michigan State at home. There will be some great tennis so come out and support the 'Cats. Right now the weather is supposed to warm so we are planning to play outside; hopefully you can come out and support us!
GO CATS!!!
