ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern and Michigan entered Thursday's game--which would be the fourth time these all-too familiar teams had collided this season--knowing that the outcome was dependent on execution. And, on this night, the Wolverines, playing comfortably at home, emerged victorious, 65-44, in the WNIT round of 16. Amy Jaeschke led NU with 12 points.
Michigan started the game on fire, connecting on 6-of-7 from the field to take a 16-2 lead in the first seven minutes. The Wolverines continued to find the scoring column, pushing the lead to as many as 20, but Northwestern cut it to 35-18 at the break.
An and-1 by Jaeschke at the 13:31 mark of the second half cut the difference to 13, but Michigan rattled off six-straight points to reclaim control. Northwestern refused to go away easily, and two free throws by Kendall Hackney and a transition lay-in by Meshia Reed once again put the 'Cats within striking distance at the 10:33 mark. Back-to-back scores once again by Reed and Hackney capped off a 9-0 Wildcat run, pulling NU to within nine, 46-35, with 8:22 remaining.
But the day proved to be Michigan's and the Wolverines recorded their 20th victory of the season and advanced to the WNIT round of eight.
Northwestern, making its first postseason appearance in 13 years, finished with an 18-15 overall mark, the most wins since the 1995-96 campaign.
