EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore Zach Morton (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) of the baseball team and junior Beth Marshall (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Morton struck out a career-high 10 batters in his outing on Monday against Cornell while also collecting three hits at the plate. He also was 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of runs driven in in Northwestern's 9-5 victory over UMBC on Friday. Morton is now third on the team with a .362 batting average this season and has struck out 23 batters in 23.2 innings pitched.
Marshall propelled NU into the second round of the Women's NIT with her 25-point performance against Duquesne on Thursday. Marshall hit six 3-pointers to pace a Wildcat offense that connected on 73 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc. On Monday, Marshall scored 11 points, dished out six assists and knocked down key free throws in the final minute to help the 'Cats eliminate St. Bonaventure in a 66-62 win.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the week is freshman Kendall Hackney (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) of the women's basketball team. Kendall assisted the St. Athanasius School with its St. Patrick's Day fundraising event last week. Along with other members of the women's basketball and cross country teams, Kendall participated in a number of activities with the children at the event including face painting, arts and crafts and various games.
