EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Jeremy Nash (Chicago, Ill./Marist) of the men's basketball team and sophomore Shannon Smith (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) of the women's lacrosse team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Nash led NU to two double-digit Big Ten victories last week beginning with a career-high 11-rebound effort against Michigan on Wednesday. On Sunday against Indiana, Nash posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds as the 'Cats dominated the Hoosiers in a 78-61 win.
Smith led Northwestern by recording six goals and dishing out three assists as NU roared past Massachusetts 18-6 in its season opener on Saturday. Smith set personal bests in points (nine), goals and assists and scored the first goal of the 2010 campaign just over two minutes into the contest. Smith is the seventh player in program history to score nine points in one game.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Darby St. Clair-Barrie (Scituate, Mass./Brooks School) of the women's lacrosse team. St. Clair-Barrie and a number of other student-athletes coordinated a drive for food and other supplies that will be donated to the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. The drive was centered around the men's basketball game against Michigan on Sunday as NU fans and the Evanston community came together to support the cause.
