EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat freshman Levi Mele (Vernal, Utah/Uintah) of the wrestling team and junior Beth Marshall (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Mele won back-to-back Big Ten dual matches on the final weekend of the regular season, beginning with an 8-4 decision of Wisconsin's Drew Hammen Friday. On Sunday, Mele selflessly moved up two weight classes to 141 pounds to help NU secure a 20-16 victory over Michigan. Trailing 5-3, Mele notched a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining before getting the winning takedown early in the sudden victory period.
Marshall led NU to a pair of Big Ten wins last week in which she shot a combined 7-of-9 from 3-point range. Marshall notched a career-best 26 points against Indiana and followed that up with 15 in Northwestern's first victory over Iowa in 10 years. In both games, Marshall hit key free throws down the stretch to help NU seal the wins, finishing 12-of-12 at the charity stripe for the week.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is sophomore Jonathan Harris (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. John Viator) of the men's soccer team. Harris was one of 11 NU student-athletes to volunteer at Willard Elementary's Jump Rope for Heart event on Feb. 19. Jump Rope for Heart is a district-wide event that brings awareness to heart health and raises money for the American Heart Association.
