EVANSTON, Ill. -- Beth Marshall led Northwestern to victories over Indiana and Iowa this week to earn Big Ten Player of the Week accolades, the conference office announced today. It was the Fishers, Ind., native's first weekly accolade and the fifth for the Wildcats this season, as Amy Jaeschke and Kendall Hackney have each been honored twice.
On the week, Marshall averaged 20.5 points on 71.4 percent shooting (10-of-14), also dishing out 5.5 assists and collecting 4.0 rebounds per game. She shot 75 percent (9-of-12) from long range over the two games and hit four free throws in the waning moments of both contests to seal NU's 15th and 16th victories of the season. Combined, Marshall was a sparkling 12-of-12 from the charity stripe and also dished out 11 helps on the week.
Marshall drained six triples on seven attempts Thursday against the Hoosiers, while also pulling down four boards and dishing out four assists in 42 minutes of action. Sunday against the Hawkeyes, the guard once again found her stroke from deep, going 3-of-5 while distributing a game-high seven helps.
With nine three-pointers on the week, Marshall increased her season total to 50, which is tied for ninth on Northwestern's single season three-pointers made list.
Northwestern is now 16-11 on the season, which guarantees it a winning record (in the regular season) for the first time since the 1996-97 campaign. The last time the Wildcats had seven conference wins was also during that 1996-97 season. Both victories this week were also milestones in the Wildcat program, as NU had not defeated Indiana since 2004 and Iowa since 2000.
The Wildcats have now won four out of their last six conference contests and battle No. 9 Ohio State Thursday in Columbus. The game will be carried live on the Big Ten Network at 5:30 p.m. CT.
