EVANSTON, Ill. -- Third-ranked Northwestern dominated the opening day of the NU Duals at Patten Gymnasium Saturday, posting a perfect 6-0 record while only dropping five bouts in the process. The Wildcats improve to 39-4 on the year, setting a new program record for victories in a season, and sitting one decision shy of notching their 40th win of the 2009-10 season.

Competing primarily against club programs, the Wildcats flexed their muscles early and often, beginning with a 27-0 sweep of Wisconsin. Northwestern then dropped Florida 25-2, behind perfect results from both the foil and sabre teams, followed by a 24-3 victory over Michigan.

The combined five bout losses to the Gators and Wolverines proved to be the only defeats the Wildcats would know on the day as Northwestern went on to close out the opening day of the Duals with perfect 27-0 decisions over Swarthmore, Minnesota and Iowa.

Each of the weapons were strong from the opening dual, but none moreso than the foil team, which did not drop a bout all afternoon and posted a 54-0 mark through the first day of the NU Duals. Sabre finished the day with a 52-2 mark, while the epee was right behind at 51-3.

The six victories bumped Northwestern's season win total to 39, surpassing the 36 victories by the 2006-07 and 2007-08 teams for the program's new single-season win record. The Wildcats also extended their winning streak to 11-straight matches dating back to last weekend's Notre Dame Duals.

Northwestern closes out the dual meet portion of its schedule Sunday morning with six more matches on tap on the final day of the NU Duals. The Wildcats begin the day with in-state rival Illinois at 8 a.m., followed by Chicago, Indiana, Michigan State and Purdue before closing out the meet against conference rival Lawrence. Action will once again take place at Patten Gymnasium with free admission to all fencing fans.
