ROCK HILL, S.C. - Miscues dug Northwestern and early deficit it was unable to recover from as the Wildcats dropped their season opener to George Mason 25-2 Friday afternoon in the first game of the Bojangles Baseball Classic.
NU returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday as it takes on host Winthrop.
With one run already in during the top of the first inning, a two-out error allowed another run to score as the Patriots jumped out to a two-run lead.
Things didn't get any better for NU starter Eric Jokisch in the second inning. George Mason had tallied once in the inning when another two-out error ended up leading to four more runs in the frame.
The Patriots added four runs in the third before the Wildcats broke through for a run in the bottom of the fourth. Chad Noble started the inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and raced home on a run-scoring double by Chris Lashmet.
Unfortunately for NU, things didn't get any better as George Mason scored three in the sixth, once in the seventh, six times and the eighth and finally four more in the ninth.
Northwestern's other run came in the bottom of the seventh as Trevor Stevens' hit brought home Colby Everett.
Lashmet led the Wildcats with two hits.
