EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Andrew Nadhir (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) of the wrestling team and freshman Alicia Gurrieri (Medford, N.J./Moorestown) of the fencing team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Nadhir defended his No. 14 ranking with a dramatic come-from-behind win in sudden victory over No. 20 Eric Terrazas of Illinois on Sunday. Nadhir fell behind 5-1 before beginning a comeback that was equal parts determination and strategy. He notched an escape and two quick takedowns to send the match to overtime, where he won on a takedown to remain unbeaten (3-0) in the Big Ten.
Gurrieri was 16-4 in her sabre bouts during the NU Duals this weekend, coming up with 2-1 marks against both No. 6 Ohio State and No. 9 Princeton. Gurrieri's performance helped the fifth-ranked 'Cats knock off the Buckeyes for the first time since 2004. Gurrieri's season record improved to 40-19, tops on Northwestern's sabre squad.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is junior Irisa Chen (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) of the fencing team. Chen and other members of the student-athlete community for helping kick off the Jump Rope for Heart for District 65. Each District 65 elementary school conducts a Jump Rope for Heart event where the children collect donations for how many jumps they perform during the event. The student-athletes educated the kids about the event and other heart-healthy activities.
