EVANSTON, Ill. -- In keeping with a Northwestern holiday tradition, the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) held its annual canned food drive over the past few weeks, benefiting Family Focus of Evanston. Student-athlete committee members collected canned foods and non-perishable items at men's and women's basketball games in addition to placing bags in local neighborhoods to collect donations.
Heading into the food drive, the goal was to collect 3,000 non-perishable food items, but through the generosity of others and the efforts of all involved, that goal was nearly doubled as over 5,700 items were collected. Organized by members of the women's golf, women's fencing and softball teams, members of nearly each of Northwestern's athletic teams took part in the drive, providing a much needed boost.
"Our student-athletes worked extremely hard in organizing the canned food drive," said Davon Robb, a member of Northwestern's academic services and student development staff. "It was great to see the Wildcat community come together and assist those in need."
The mission of Family Focus is to promote the well-being of children from birth by supporting and strengthening their families in and with their communities. Family Focus offers innovative, community-based programs that help parents, grandparents, and foster and adoptive parents, gain confidence and competence as the primary educators of their children.
The canned food drive is a yearly tradition that SAAC gets involved in, hoping to help provide food for needy family during the winter months. The student-athlete turnout and result was the most in the history of Northwestern's involvement with Family Focus of Evanston.
