EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat senior Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team and junior John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) of the men's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Jaeschke averaged nearly a double-double with 24.3 points per game and nine rebounds over the course of a grueling week of basketball. Following a hard-fought four-point road defeat at 16th-ranked DePaul, Jaeschke led Northwestern to a pair of victories over Northern Illinois (68-59) and Northern Arizona (88-70) to pull the Wildcats' win total to 10 on the season. She also averaged five blocks per contest on the defensive end.
Shurna averaged 27 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 2 blocked shots in two games last week and scored his 1,000th career point last week Thursday against American. Shurna also helped the Wildcats start the season 7-0 for the first time since the 1993-94 campaign. On Monday night, Shurna stayed right on his averages by scoring 26 points and grabbing six rebounds in NU's win over St. Francis (N.Y.) in the opening game of the Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Both Jaeschke and Shurna were named Big Ten Player of the Week in their respective sports.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is senior Kate Stephenson (Davis, Calif./Davis Senior High) of the women's swimming team. During Northwestern's winter training trip to Puerto Rico, Stephenson spearheaded the Wildcats' efforts to provide care packages for members of the U.S. Air Force. Stephenson organized her team into five teams to collect candy, holiday goods, playing cards, books, magazines and personal care items for the troops as well as stuffed animals for children in Afghan villages.
