Girardi Named Recipient of NCAA Silver Anniversary Award

EVANSTON, Ill. - Former Northwestern baseball standout and current New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi has been selected by the NCAA as one of this year's six recipients of the Silver Anniversary Award. The honor is presented to individuals of merit 25 years following the completion of their collegiate athletic career.
Girardi will be recognized for the honor Jan. 14, 2011 at the NCAA Convention in San Antonio, Texas.
In addition to Girardi, the other recipients include Theresa Edwards (women's basketball; Georgia), Tim Green (football; Syracuse), Bo Jackson (football, baseball and outdoor track; Auburn), Scott Verplank (men's golf; Oklahoma State) and Lisa Caputo (field hockey and lacrosse; Brown) who earned her master's degree from Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism.
A 1986 graduate of Northwestern with a degree in industrial engineering, Girardi was a three-time Academic All-American for the Wildcats and was inducted into the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 2007. Girardi was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and a third-team ABCA All-American as a catcher in 1985.
He went on to play 15 seasons of Major League Baseball with the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies, New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals. A 2000 All-Star selection while with the Cubs, Girardi earned three World Series rings during his time with the Yankees.
Following his playing career, Girardi was named the 2006 National League Manager of the Year after his first and only season at the helm of the Florida Marlins. He has been the manager of the Yankees for the last three seasons and led the team to its 27th World Championship in 2009.
Off the field, Girardi has been involved in numerous philanthropic efforts, including creating his Catch 25 charity which is dedicated to providing support to families and individuals who have been challenged with ALS, Alzheimer's, cancer and fertility issues.
In order to be eligible, the nominee must be a college graduate and a varsity letter-winner at an NCAA member institution and must have achieved personal distinction since his or her graduation. The selection criteria are weighted 50 percent to the nominee's status as a prominent collegiate athlete and 50 percent to the nominee's career achievement.
