TEMPE, Ariz. -- On the last day of NU's fall tournament schedule, Northwestern freshman Belinda Niu came up short in her bid to win the singles main draw at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational Sunday as Arizona State's Kelcy McKenna defended her home courts. McKenna defeated Niu, 7-5, 6-2.
In consolation singles action for Northwestern, sophomore Kate Turvy picked up an easy 6-0, 6-2, victory against Arizona State's Hannah James on Sunday. That was the lone singles win on the day for NU as Elena Chernyakova fell to Gabby Steele of Ohio State, 6-2, 6-0. Stacey Lee and Brittany Wowchuk each were forced to abandon their matches after winning first sets off of a pair of Michigan Wolverines, Michelle Sulahian and Mimi Nguyen, respectively.
The Thunderbird also featured a final round of doubles action, where Wowchuk and Turvy managed an 8-5 win over Michigan's Whitney Taney and Brooke Bolender and Chernyakova and Natalie Edell were defeated, 8-4, by Juliette Coupez and Maja Sujica of the University of San Diego.
Northwestern now has a two-month layoff before opening its spring season with the Wildcat Invitational on Jan. 14.
