EVANSTON, Ill. -- After finishing her second-straight regular season as the Big Ten's leader in goals and points scored, Northwestern's Chelsea Armstrong was voted the league's 2010 Offensive Player of the Year, the Big Ten announced at its annual year-end banquet Thursday. In addition, senior defender Sarah Marcincin received her first all-conference honor, garnering second-team All-Big Ten recognition.
Senior goalkeeper Katie Lynch was also honored as Northwestern's Sportsmanship Award winner.
Armstrong, NU's first Player of the Year on either side of the ball since Gretchen Scheuermann in 1994, was also named a first-team All-Big Ten selection for the second year in a row. The last Wildcats before Armstrong to achieve back-to-back first-team all-conference were Amy Borneman and Betsy Vance in 1994-95.
Armstrong's career-best 24 goals and 60 points paced the Big Ten and each rank second all-time at NU for single-season totals. The native of Perth, Australia, scored seven game-winners for the 'Cats in 2010 and posted two four-goal efforts, first against UC Davis and again at Iowa on Oct. 24.
Through 38 career games played at NU, Armstrong has racked up 46 goals -- fifth all-time at Northwestern -- and 116 points (fourth).
Marcincin, meanwhile, has started every game for the Wildcats since the start of the 2008 season and was a leader on an NU defense that completed a stretch of 10 games this season without allowing more than two goals in a game.
On Oct. 29, Marcincin and the rest of the Wildcat defense held Penn State without a shot during the run of play for the entire game.
On the other end of the field, Marcincin set a career high as a senior with nine assists - many of which came off her key role on NU's penalty corner unit - including four in one game at Iowa. Marcincin scored two goals in 2010, with both coming in a 4-2 win over Indiana on Oct. 8.
