EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern wraps up its fall season this weekend, sending three Wildcats to compete in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York City Nov. 4-7, while the rest of the team heads to Phoenix, Ariz. to compete in the ASU Thunderbird.
The National Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for both men and women, made up of the nation's top collegiate tennis talent. The event will be played at the new indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, with Columbia University serving as host.
Sophomore Linda Abu Mushrefova and freshman Nida Hamilton make up the doubles tandem that will represent the 'Cats in New York, securing their invite with a 9-7 victory in the doubles final of the Midwest Regional Championships on Oct. 25. Despite having not played a match together prior to the regionals, the duo went undefeated in six matches to earn the doubles crown.
Their first test at National Indoors will come against Alabama's Alexa Gurachi and Courtney McLane, who earned the draw's No. 4 seed.
Senior Maria Mosolova earned a wildcard entry into the Singles Draw by virtue of her run to the semifinals at the Regional Championships and her top-15 national singles ranking. Mosolova's tournament opens with a first-round match against Washington's Venise Chan while sixth-seeded Allie Will of Florida likely looms in the second round.
The senior is a veteran of the National Indoor Championships, making her fourth consecutive appearance in the 32-player draw. Mosolova won four straight matches to capture the consolation bracket title as a freshman, and made a run to the semifinals as a sophomore.
In the desert, the rest of the squad looks to end the fall on a high note as they compete against challenging Pac-10 and Big Ten competition at the Whiteman Tennis Center. Schools at the Invitational include California, Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon, San Diego and Arizona State.
Results and schedules for the weekend are available by visiting the respective tournament websites of both events.
After this weekend, Northwestern takes a two-month break before hosting the Wildcat Invitational Jan. 14-16 to kick-off the spring season.
