Jaeschke Named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week
The Big Ten Conference announced that senior Amy Jaeschke was named co-Big Ten Player of the Week after helping Northwestern remain unbeaten this week with a pair of wins over Western Kentucky on the road and against Chicago State Sunday. It is the fourth time in her career she has garnered the League's weekly accolade.
Jaeschke, a Naismith Trophy Preseason Watch List member, notched a triple double against Chicago Sunday afternoon with 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks. Jaeschke shot 86 percent from the field (12-of-14) and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe while playing all but one minute of the game. It is the first triple double in the Wildcat record books since Amber DeWall in 1998. It is also the first by a Big Ten player since Iowa's Kachine Alexander in a triple overtime win over Penn State on Feb. 1, 2009 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Ironically enough, Jaeschke shares this week's honor with Alexander.
Against Western Kentucky, Jaeschke tallied 13 points in just 18 minutes, shooting 60 percent from the field while gathering six rebounds. The senior finished the week shooting 75.0 percent (18-of-24) from the field and averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 6.5 blocks per game.
Wildcats Ink Jones to Round out Class of 2015
Head coach Joe McKeown announced today the signing of Morgan Jones to the National Letter of Intent. Jones (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lake Mary) becomes the third member of this year's class, joining Wisconsin native Alex Cohen (Bayside, Wis./Nicolet) and Canadian Karly Roser (Hamilton, Ontairo, Canada/Saint Mary's).
Jones, an all-around athlete who also stars in volleyball, comes to NU as the ninth-ranked player in the nation and the third at her position by Hoopgurlz.com. The multi-sport team captain has been a first-team all-conference honoree in both volleyball and basketball. On the hardwood, she is a three-time selection and an All-State performer last season who is averaging 18.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg and four assists per outing during her high school career. She is also a three-year member of the Naval ROTC as well as a peer mentor who is active in the community, participating in Relay for Life and volunteering at children's hospitals in the Altamonte Springs area.
Orban Comes Alive Out of the Gates
Junior Brittany Orban contributed in a big way in the opening weekend, spearheading Northwestern's much-emphasized rebounding effort against LSU. The Canton, Ohio, native pulled down a career-best 17 rebounds while contributing 18 points, three assists and a steal. Against Western Kentucky, Orban was a perfect 11-of-11 from the free-throw line, contributing a team-high 20 points and six rebounds. Orban comes in eighth this week in the conference and first in the team, in free-throw percentage, connecting on 90 percent of her opportunities.
Jaeschke Up To Her Old Tricks
Senior Amy Jaeschke picked up right where she left off last season, leading the Wildcats in both scoring and rebounding in three of the first four games. Jaeschke recorded a double-double against Dartmouth in the season opener with 20 points and 10 rebounds while adding four assists and one block. The 6-5 center brought her "A" game against LSU, notching in 28 points, six rebounds and four blocks. At Western Kentucky, Jaeschke managed to notch 13 points and six boards in just 18 minutes of action. The captain recorded her first career triple-double against Chicago State with 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.
Oh Captain, My Captain
This year's captains are senior Beth Marshall and Amy Jaeschke and junior Alison Mocchi.
