EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat seniors Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team and Sean Mathews (St. Louis, Mo./Lafayette) of the men's swimming team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Jaeschke helped NU remain unbeaten this week with a pair of wins over Western Kentucky and Chicago State. The senior notched a triple-double against Chicago State with 30 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks. Jaeschke shot 86 percent from the field (12-of-14) and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe while playing all but one minute of the game. It is the first triple-double in the Wildcat record book since 1997. Against Western Kentucky, Jaeschke tallied 13 points in just 18 minutes, shooting 60 percent from the field while gathering six rebounds.
Mathews was the high-point scorer at the TYR Invitational, scoring 93 points to lead NU to the team title in the five-team meet. Mathews won all three butterfly events (50, 100, 200) while earning an NCAA 'B' cut with a 1:46.78 in the 200 fly, currently the 10th-fastest time in the nation this year. He also swam on the winning 200 medley, 400 medley and 200 free relays.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week honor goes to sophomore Erin Fitzgerald (Mt. Sinai, N.Y./Mt. Sinai) of the women's lacrosse team. Fitzgerald and her teammates attended the Salvation Army Red Kettle Kickoff on Friday, Nov. 19 in Evanston. They were joined by members of the Evanston Police Department, Evanston Fire Department and majors from the Salvation Army. This event signifies the start of the Salvation Army's annual Christmas fund-raising campaign to benefit the community, in this case the city of Evanston. Fitzgerald spoke at the event emphasizing the importance of giving back to the Evanston Community.
