EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat junior Dan Persa (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) of the football team and senior Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Weekend for their performances over the weekend.
Jaeschke guided Northwestern to a pair of victories over two perennial NCAA Tournament teams last weekend, averaging 24 points and eight rebounds in the process. The Wildcats defeated Ivy League powerhouse Dartmouth, 66-37, behind a double-double 20-point, 10-rebound performance by Jaeschke. NU then took down LSU on Sunday as Jaeschke filled the stat sheet with 28 points, six rebounds, four blocks and three assists and 11-of-15 shooting at the free throw line.
Persa led Northwestern to a 21-17 triumph over No. 13 Iowa on Saturday by setting career highs with 318 yards on 32-of-43 passing with two touchdowns through the air and a third on the ground. Persa rallied NU from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit by directing touchdown drives of 85 and 91 yards, capped off by the game-winning TD pass to Demetrius Fields with 1:22 remaining.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is redshirt freshman Mike Trumpy (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) of the football team. Mike and several of his teammates recently visited the Children's Memorial Hospital, meeting with patients and their families. The players handed out posters, signed autographs, posed for pictures and talked football with the children.
