EVANSTON, Ill. -- Through the first day of play at the Wildcat Fall Invitational, Northwestern has both doubles duos and two of its four singles entrants still alive on the championship sides of their respective brackets.
After receiving a first-round bye in flight A doubles, NU freshmen Natalie Edell and Elizabeth Kobak posted a win in tiebreakers, 9-8 (4), over DePaul's Kelsey Lawson and Christiana Raymond.
In flight D, Elena Chernyakova and Nida Hamilton won their first-round match, 8-6, against Mariya Kovaleva and Elisa Simonetti of Illinois-Chicago. The 'Cats' second-round match against Oklahoma's Tara Eckel and Alice Radu was suspended due to darkness, however, with the Wildcats holding a 5-4 edge.
Moving into singles, Hamilton knocked off a Big Ten opponent in Minnesota's Emilie Renault, 6-1, 6-3, in flight C, while Kobak remains in the winners' draw in flight A after receiving a first-round bye.
The action on Saturday will get underway at 9 a.m. with the tournament's last remaining round of doubles before moving for the duration of the weekend back into singles. Complete results from Friday's opening rounds are available in PDF format at the top of the page.
