EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Northwestern opened the 2010 Big Ten Indoor Championships hosted by Michigan State Friday with one doubles pairing in Flight A and three in the Flight B draws. Junior Joshua Graves and sophomore Spencer Wolf won their first two matches and ultimately finished 3-1 on the day in Flight A.

Wolf and Graves got off to a fast start when they downed Penn State's Russell Bader and Bryan Welnetz, 8-2, in the first round. After that, the 'Cats cruised past Wisconsin's Alex Robles and Alexander Teppert, 8-1, before falling in the doubles semifinals to Michigan's Barrett Franks and Justin Rossi in a tight 8-6 outcome.

Graves and Wolf were able to respond by gutting out a 9-8 (7) tiebreaker win in the third-place match against Minnesota's Julian Dehn and Brendan Ruddock to finish 3-1 on the afternoon.

Northwestern had similar success in Flight B, where Andrew McCarthy and Sidarth Balaji also posted a 3-1 mark by taking their first match over Michigan State's Christian Roehmer and Will Davis 8-6 before winning back-to-back matches in the consolation bracket.

Junior Tobias Reitz and freshman Raleigh Smith split their first two outcomes of the day before finishing with a flourish, overcoming MSU's Roehmer and Davis in a 9-8 (5) tiebreaker.

Play continues Saturday morning with singles action. Complete doubles results are available by downloading the PDF documents linked at the top of the page.
