ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Northwestern doubles team of sophomore Linda Abu Mushrefova and freshman Nida Hamilton won two matches Sunday to advance to the championship match of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor. The final is scheduled to be contested at 9 a.m. Monday.
Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton opened play Sunday with an 8-6 upset victory over the second-seeded pairing of Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno of Michigan. The 'Cats then overcame a second Wolverine opponent, knocking off Michelle Sulahain and Sam Critser, 8-5, to reach the tournament final against Illinois' Allison Falkin and Rachael White.
In singles, three Wildcats are among the last eight players remaining in the championship draw. On Monday, defending champion Maria Mosolova will face Michigan's Mimi Nguyen for a berth in the semifinals while NU teammates Kate Turvy and Brittany Wowchuk must square off for the right to advance.
Mosolova recorded her round of 16 win against DePaul's Katarina Milinkovic, winning 6-0, 6-2, while in the lower half of the draw Wowchuk upset fourth-seeded Shannon Mathews of Notre Dame in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
Turvy managed to defeat Ohio State's Kelsey Haviland, 6-4, 6-4, to set up her quarterfinal matchup with Wowchuk.
Northwestern freshman Belinda Niu battled valiantly against top-seeded and a tournament finalist in 2009 Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame before falling, 6-2, 6-3.
The eventual winners of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships receive a trip to the ITA's National Indoor Tournament in November.
