ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Northwestern came away with a perfect 3-0 mark in doubles on its first afternoon of action at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday at the University of Michigan. After all three pairings earned first-round byes, the 'Cats all posted wins to advance to the round of 16.

Northwestern's seeded tandem of Elena Chernyakova and Brittany Wowchuk surrendered the fewest games to their opponents on Friday, knocking off Ohio State's Kara Cecil and Noelle Malley, 8-3.
In the top corner of the bracket, sophomore Kate Turvy and freshman Belinda Niu managed to defeat Toledo's Kelsey Anonson and Ashley Frey, 8-5. Consequently, Turvy and Niu earned a third-round date with the tournament's No. 1-seeded Kristy Frilling and Shannon Matthews of Notre Dame on Saturday.
Northwestern's final duo of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton fought hard to earn their trip to the round of 16, defeating Michigan State's Whitney Wilson and Marina Bohrer, 9-7.
The eventual winners of the ITA Midwest Regional Championships receive a trip to the ITA's National Indoor Tournament in November.
