NU Announces Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomores Lauren Weaver (Scottsdale, Ariz./Cactus Shadows) of the women's golf team and Sidarth Balaji (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) of the men's tennis team have been named Northwestern's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Weaver rewrote the Northwestern history book at the Lady Northern hosted by NU last weekend, shooting the lowest 54-hole score in program history by three strokes -- an 8-under 208 -- en route to the tournament's individual championship. In round one of the event, Weaver set a school record for lowest single-round score with a 6-under 66. As a team, the rest of the Wildcats seemed to feed off Weaver's momentum, combining to post a 1-over 289 over the final 18 holes, overcoming a six-shot deficit to surpass Ohio State and earn team runner-up honors.
Balaji led Northwestern during its home tournament, the Wildcat Invitational, going 3-1 in singles on the weekend to advance to the Flight A singles championship match. Balaji won a tough first-round match in a third-set super tiebreaker, defeating Marquette's Dan Mamalat 6-7 (5), 6-4, 1-0 (14-12). He then knocked off Wisconsin's Petr Satral and DePaul's Sven Kasper to reach the flight title match against Iowa's Marc Bruche -- who played consistently at No. 1 singles for the Hawkeyes a year ago -- where he fell in a hard-fought 7-6 (2), 7-5 match. Balaji, who last season played everywhere from No. 2 to No. 6 singles for NU, also won one doubles match in the tournament playing alongside Chris Jackman.
This week's Community Outreach Athlete of the Week is junior Adrienne Monka (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Rancho Cucamonga) of the softball team. Monka and other student-athletes assisted Willard Elementary with their Fall Fest event on Saturday. Fall Fest is an event where Willard Elementary invites young kids to the school to play games, eat great food and win prizes. Student-athletes helped with some of the stations such as the Moon Bounce, Karaoke, and Pumpkin Toss.
