NU Announces Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore John Shurna (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West) of the men's basketball team and junior Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances last week.
Shurna averaged 28.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game in Northwestern's first two Big Ten contests of the season. He scored 27 points and had seven rebounds in 44 minutes of action in an overtime contest at Illinois. Shurna followed up the effort by posting a game-high 29 points to go along with six boards and four assists against No. 11 Michigan State on Saturday. His effort against the Spartans made him the first Wildcat since the 2005-06 season to score 20 points in four straight games.
Jaeschke recorded two double-digit scoring performances and reached a pair of career milestones in NU's Big Ten outings last week. Jaeschke scored 13 points and pulled down her 500th career rebound against No. 6 Ohio State before lighting up Penn State for a game-high 22 points and blocking her 200th career shot. Jaeschke connected on 10-of-12 free throws against the Nittany Lions and added three assists and four boards.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is senior Genny Szymanski (Haines, Alaska/Haines) of the women's swimming team. Szymanski and the entire women's swimming and diving team donated gifts to the children at the Children's Home Society of Florida while on their training trip over winter break. The gifts were intended to brighten up the holiday seasons for less fortunate children who may not otherwise experience the joys of the holidays.
