EVANSTON, Ill. -- Wildcat sophomore Joshua Graves (Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet) of the men's tennis team and junior Amy Jaeschke (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) of the women's basketball team have been named NU's Hilton Garden Inn Athletes of the Week for their performances over the weekend.
Graves provided Northwestern with a series of strong performances in NU's 4-3 upset of No. 18 Alabama Friday and its 5-2 defeat of William & Mary on Sunday. Graves, who spent most of the 2009 season playing No. 4 singles, proved he belonged at the No. 1 spot when he upended the Crimson Tide's No. 62 Saketh Myeni in straight sets. Against the Tribe, Graves again won at No. 1 singles and contributed to a win at No. 2 doubles.
Jaeschke enjoyed a milestone week for the 'Cats, scoring the 1,000th point of her Northwestern career Thursday at Indiana and becoming the school's all-time leading shot-blocker on Sunday at Iowa. Jaeschke poured in a season-best 30 points against the Hawkeyes to go along with her three assists, three rejections and team-high eight rebounds.
This week's Community Service Athlete of the Week is sophomore Annelise Eeman (St. Louis Park, Minn./St. Louis Park) of the fencing team. Eeman and other student-athletes assisted with the Passport to the Arts program at Willard Elementary on Jan. 22. This event was an evening of arts and music from around the world with crafts for kids, musical performances and a featured performance from Evanston's own Escola de Samba.
